ΨΗΦΙΑΚΟ ΜΟΥΣΕΙΟ ΒΛΑΧΟΚΕΡΑΣΙΑΣ

Structural and Other Changes during the period August – November 2017

We are in the happy position to announce that during the last four months (August-November 2017), VDM has been enriched by the incorporation of significant new materials (Table, 2nd column). The enrichment has been made possible by the participation of almost all the Committee members (See Table, 1st column). All the main menu categories have been enriched, except one –“Sites –Environment” (Table, 3rd column). Although all the new materials are significant, I would like to elaborate more on the first two structural changes. The first involves the addition of the “Male Birth Records”, which cover the period 1837-1953, and refer to those compatriots whose birth was registered in the village of Vlahokerasia, while the “Male Birth Records of the Municipality of Manthyrea”, that we had already posted, included male births from several neighboring villages, including the village of Vlahokerasia, and covered the period 1846-1878. Undoubtedly, there will be duplications for the overlapping years, but we decided to include it because it covers a longer period of time. The two birth registries were subsumed under a new subcategory –“Birth Registries”, allowing for the future incorporation of female birth records. The second structural change involves the introduction to VDM of an altogether new subcategory “Efthymografimata Vlahokerasioton1 ”, which constitute an integral cultural element of oral tradition. The rest of the materials were incorporated in the various subcategories of VDM (popular arts, life cycle, businesses in the village, winter settlements, churches, associations, omogeneis and Vlahokerasiotes beyond the village in the sciences, politics and businesses). All the new materials are presented in the table below and in alphabetical order, according to the last name of the committee member responsible for the collection and preparation of the new materials.

Alternative paths to the new materials. Our visitors can view the new materials taking the following digital path: Once you enter the VDM from your browser, you can click successively on the main menu category (Table, 3rd column) and then the subcategory (Table, 4th column). This takes you to the introduction of the subcategory (thematic unit) that is accompanied by a photo – the cover page of the flipping book. Clicking on the photo will take you to the flipping book τhat contains the new materials. Alternatively, the visitors can reach the introduction page with the photo by taking shortcut: by clicking on the relevant subcategory-link (Table, 4th column). From here, you click on the photo. This takes you to the flipping book. From here, you can access the new materials page-by-page from the beginning by clicking on the forward arrow at the bottom right of their screen or directly by entering the desired page numbers (Table, 5th column) in the space for page numbers (either on the top left or bottom right of your screen). In cases where the original documents have small characters (e.g. archives, birth records, etc.), the visitors can use the magnification tools (zoom) available (icon on the bottom left of their screen) to enlarge the texts.

Our compatriots and their friends can submit the new materials to any member of the VDM Committee (See “Contact” of the main menu for their e-mails, telephone numbers and addresses). However,
for the sake of economy – and this is an additional submission criterion – the Committee decided not to post materials ad hoc, as they are submitted to us, but to post them on a regular periodic basis, three times annually or every four months, starting with the new year, 2018. Specifically, on April 30, August 31 and December 31. During the first year of implementation, which we consider as a transition year, we shall make an exception and will post materials that Committee members will have in their possession by 31 January 2018. In all cases, the new materials should be in the hands of Committee members at least two weeks before the deadlines, in order to have sufficient time for consultation among members of the Committee and further digital processing for posting on our website. We invite all our compatriots and their friends, wherever they live, to participate in the further enrichment of VDM, by sending us materials related to all the thematic categories (flipping books) of VDM and pertaining to the village of Vlahokerasia or its residents and descendants – the Vlahokerasiotes. Thematic categories for which we especially need further enrichment include the “Efthymografimata Vlahokerasioton”, “the Washing of Clothes”, “Our Irrigated Farmlands…” (e.g. Valtena), “Activities of Vlahokerasiotes Omogeneis” and last, but not least, ”Vlahokerasiotes beyond Vlahokerasia”, who live outside Vlahokerasia and whose reputation as scientists, artists, medical doctors, politicians, judges and business entrepreneurs extends beyond local borders, regardless of where they live. Except for the thematic categories, we also need more materials from Vlahokerasiotes who live outside Vlahokerasia and Athens (e.g. Pittsburgh, Sidney, Melbourne, Chicago, Montreal, Sparti, Tripolis, Volos, etc), where there were or still are large concentrations of Vlahokerasiotes and had/have forms of social organization (communities, churches, associations, etc.) even if these forms of organization no longer exist. These materials can come from and concern all generaτions in the host cities. For example, it would be of great interest to the Committee to have materials about the first Vlahokerasiotes settlers in the various cities2, as well as materials on and from the youngest generations in various cities. For the criteria that the submission of new materials must satisfy, I refer those interested to the respective introductions to the various thematic categories (flipping books).

We are hopeful that you will respond to our call for new materials and contribute to the further enrichment of the V.D.M. We are also looking forward to your comments. For now, we wish you a happy navigation to our new acquisitions.

1 Funny, everyday-life short stories

2 During its 16/08/2917 meeting, the VDM Committee decided to add three new subcategories of content in VDM – three flipping books, i.e. the “Efthimografimata Vlahokerasioton”, the “Vlahokerasia Male Birth Registry” and on Vlahokererasiotes living in other cities of Greece, besides Vlahokerasia and Athens. The first two have been created and posted (See Table). The third one will be created when we have collected enough materials.
